Routine Dentistry & Hygiene

Routine check-ups and preventative care are essential components of effective medicine, including dentistry. As such, our team aims to provide patients with routine services that keep their teeth, gums, and oral tissues in the best possible condition.

What Is Routine Dental Care?

Routine dental care includes the services and procedures that patients receive on a regular basis. For example, dental patients commonly have examinations and cleanings performed once every six months.

Visiting a dentist on a routine basis enables patients to monitor their oral health under the guidance of a dental professional. These evaluations help to prevent the development of serious disorders like gum disease and tooth decay.

Even if you take care of your teeth and practice good dental hygiene, it’s important to regularly visit your dentist for cleanings and examinations. Routine dental visits every six months can help patients stay on top of their hygiene practices, as well as allow dental professionals to keep an eye out for minor problems before they become serious.

Components of Routine Dentistry

Hygienic & Preventative Care
Routine dental visits combine hygienic procedures with preventative care, and during these visits, patients can expect the following:

  1. Oral Examinations (though at Herre Holistic Dental KC, we include holistic examination of the head, airway, teeth, tongue, jaws, and soft tissues)
  2. Dental X-rays
  3. Oral Cancer Screenings
  4. Dental Cleanings

If an oral health issue is discovered during a routine exam, our team can take the steps needed to treat the problem before it becomes serious.

Benefits of Regular Dental Visits
It may be easy to miss small chips or cracks, stains, gum disease, erosion of the tooth, and the beginning stages of oral cancers when patients don’t know what to look for. Undergoing twice-yearly professional care can decrease the risk of developing oral health conditions, which can also help individuals maintain their whole-body wellness.

Most oral conditions do not start out as an emergency, and by having a dental professional assess a patient’s teeth and gums on a regular basis, most conditions never move beyond being a minor issue.

It’s far simpler, less painful, and more cost-effective to treat a minor issue early than it is to attempt to repair a serious condition that has been left to develop without intervention. A small cavity, for example, is easier to repair than replacing an entire tooth or a selection of teeth that have been destroyed by decay.

What to Expect

If you are not familiar with routine dental care, you may be curious or even apprehensive about what may occur during your routine visit.

At Herre Holistic Dental KC, we understand that visiting a dentist for the first time in years (or the first time ever, in some cases) can be anxiety-inducing. As such, we aim to reduce patient apprehension by providing a basic walkthrough of what to expect during a routine dental visit.

After checking in and filling out paperwork, our team may take x-ray images in order to check for cavities or abnormalities in areas of the mouth that are difficult to see.

A dental hygienist will then clean your teeth and afterward, Dr. Herre will perform an examination to look for anything out of the ordinary. Treatment, if anything more than a cleaning, will be recommended based on the dentist’s findings.

Our dental team may also provide educational information about your current oral health condition, as well as recommend ways to improve hygiene.

If you have been given a clean bill of health, our team will schedule you for a follow-up appointment in six months for your second yearly examination and cleaning.

Our holistic dental team embraces the fact that a healthy mouth promotes other healthy body systems. By pairing an effective at-home oral hygiene regimen with routine dental visits, our patients can keep their teeth, gums, and other oral tissues in optimal condition, which will help improve their whole-body health by extension.

Routine Treatments

Oral Surgery

We are pleased to offer surgical services at our office. Dr. Craig and Dr. Tim perform minor oral surgery using local anesthesia. When the need for advanced oral surgery arises, we are happy to help you coordinate the appropriate treatment.

Root Canal

If you have a tooth that is badly decayed or infected, we may recommend endodontic (root canal) treatment. Endodontic treatment is one of the most effective approaches for restoring the health of infected or badly damaged teeth.

Night Guards

If you are one of the thousands of individuals who rub and/or grind your upper and lower teeth during sleep, we can provide fitted plastic or hard acrylic night guards, worn in your mouth at night or even during the day. These appliances protect your teeth and reduce the need for future restorative dental work. If you are diagnosed with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), we may recommend that you sleep with a bite splint, a fitted appliance that reduces joint pain and improves jaw joint alignment.

Schedule an Appointment

If it’s time for your next routine dental health visit, or you do not currently have a regular dentist, we welcome you to give us a call at your earliest convenience. One of our team members will help you schedule an appointment as soon as possible, and from there, we can help you maintain your oral health. We look forward to your visit and we’d like to welcome you to our Leawood, KS office. Call us at 913-491-4466 or schedule a consultation at our Leawood, KS office.
