Routine Dentistry & Hygiene
What Is Routine Dental Care?
Visiting a dentist on a routine basis enables patients to monitor their oral health under the guidance of a dental professional. These evaluations help to prevent the development of serious disorders like gum disease and tooth decay.
Even if you take care of your teeth and practice good dental hygiene, it’s important to regularly visit your dentist for cleanings and examinations. Routine dental visits every six months can help patients stay on top of their hygiene practices, as well as allow dental professionals to keep an eye out for minor problems before they become serious.
Components of Routine Dentistry
- Oral Examinations (though at Herre Holistic Dental KC, we include holistic examination of the head, airway, teeth, tongue, jaws, and soft tissues)
- Dental X-rays
- Oral Cancer Screenings
- Dental Cleanings
- Fluoride Treatment
If an oral health issue is discovered during a routine exam, a dental professional can take the steps needed to treat the problem before it becomes serious.
Most oral conditions do not start out as an emergency, and by having a dental professional assess a patient’s teeth and gums on a regular basis, most conditions never move beyond being a minor issue.
It’s far simpler, less painful, and more cost-effective to treat a minor issue early than it is to attempt to repair a serious condition that has been left to develop without intervention. A small cavity, for example, is easier to repair than replacing an entire tooth or a selection of teeth that have been destroyed by decay.
What to Expect
At Herre Holistic Dental KC, we understand that visiting a dentist for the first time in years (or the first time ever, in some cases) can be anxiety-inducing. As such, we aim to reduce patient apprehension by providing a basic walkthrough of what to expect during a routine dental visit.
After checking in and filling out paperwork,
Dental office professionals may take x-ray images in order to check for cavities or abnormalities in areas of the mouth that are difficult to see.
A dental hygienist will then clean your teeth and afterward, Dr. Herre will perform an examination to look for anything out of the ordinary. Treatment, if anything more than a cleaning, will be recommended based on the dentist’s findings.
Dental staff may also provide education about your current oral health condition, as well as recommend ways to improve hygiene.
If you have been given a clean bill of health, the front office staff will schedule you for a follow-up appointment in six months for your second yearly examination and cleaning.
Holistic dental professionals embrace the fact that a healthy mouth promotes other healthy body systems. By pairing an effective at-home oral hygiene regimen with routine dental visits, our patients can keep their teeth, gums, and other oral tissues in optimal condition, which will help improve their whole-body health by extension.
