Invisalign

Everybody wants a smile that they can have confidence in, and at Herre Holistic Dental KC, our dental team can offer patients alignment options that can straighten teeth both effectively and discreetly.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a teeth alignment system that differs significantly from the use of traditional braces. While regular braces rely on wires and brackets to straighten teeth, Invisalign utilizes a series of clear plastic trays to bring teeth into proper alignment.

Unlike braces, Invisalign’s clear appearance makes the trays difficult to detect, which is part of what makes this system such a popular choice for both adults and young people.

The trays can be taken out when a patient eats and brushes their teeth as well, meaning that there are fewer risks of staining and tooth decay than what may occur with traditional braces.

They’re just as effective as metal braces, affordably priced, and they add convenience to the process. They do not limit the patient’s diet, they make oral hygiene as simple as ever, and using this method usually requires fewer dental visits.

Why Invisalign?
While straight, beautiful teeth are great for enhancing confidence, proper alignment can also improve an individual’s overall health through airway enhancement and optimal oral function.

The thought of committing to metal braces can be unpleasant, especially for individuals who hope to discreetly make positive changes in the aesthetics of their teeth.

Fortunately, metal braces are not the only option when it comes to achieving straight teeth.

Teeth alignment systems can be used to correct several alignment issues, including crooked teeth, crowded teeth, unevenly spaced teeth, and bite pattern problems in some situations.

Traditionally, metal braces and retainers were used to treat alignment issues, and while metal braces are still common, advancements in dental technology have made clear alignment systems, like Invisalign, another option.

Invisalign Considerations
As with any dental treatment, there are a few things to keep in mind when deciding whether Invisalign is the best option.

For one, it’s crucial to remove Invisalign before eating and drinking to avoid getting residue caught in the trays. Regularly cleaning the alignment system is also important, because neglecting to do so can lead to the trays becoming stained (which will make teeth appear discolored).

The trays must be worn regularly as well. The system is not going to work if the trays are constantly removed. Taking them out to eat and drink is advisable, but for the best results possible, they should otherwise be kept in place.

Finally, getting used to the trays can be challenging, much like getting used to traditional braces. Having saliva accumulate inside the tray can affect speech, but this is usually temporary.

How Does Invisalign Work?
When a patient chooses Invisalign at our office, Dr. Herre will take impressions of the patient’s mouth so that each tray can be designed specifically for the individual’s mouth.

Every tray is made so that it progressively moves the teeth a tiny amount at a time. Once the patient has completed one tray usage (usually lasting a couple of weeks), they move onto a tray that’s slightly more snug. This way, the system continues to encourage the teeth to move into the area that the dentist maps out.

Once the series of trays have been worn for their specific timeline, and the teeth have moved into their desired alignment, the process is considered complete.

Invisalign Aftercare
Like traditional alignment methods, teeth straightened with Invisalign can move out of alignment if they’re left alone after treatment. For this reason, patients will still need to wear a retainer after treatment. The first couple of months after treatment may have patients wearing a retainer at night, and the frequency will decrease as time passes.

After a significant length of time has passed, patients may only need to wear a retainer one or two nights a week to keep their teeth properly aligned.
