CEREC technology allows us to take a digital scan, design the restoration and create a metal-free ceramic crown in our Leawood office. For suitable cases, the crown can be prepared, fitted and placed during one appointment without sending impressions to an outside laboratory.
Because the crown is created during your visit (often in less than 2 hours), you can usually avoid wearing a temporary crown and returning for a separate placement appointment.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a CEREC Crown?

What Happens During a Same-Day Crown Appointment?
A same-day CEREC crown appointment generally involves the following steps:
1. Examination and Assessment
Your dentist examines the tooth and may take dental X-rays or other records to determine whether a crown is appropriate.
2. Preparing the Tooth
The area is numbed, damaged or decayed material is removed, and the tooth is shaped to support the new crown.
3. Digital Scanning
A digital scanner records the prepared tooth, your bite and the surrounding teeth without requiring a conventional putty impression.
4. Designing the Crown
CEREC software is used to design a crown that fits the prepared tooth and works with your bite.
5. Creating the Restoration
The crown is milled from ceramic material in our Leawood office.
6. Checking and Placing the Crown
Your dentist checks the crown’s fit, shape, color and contact with your bite. Necessary adjustments are made before the crown is bonded securely in place.

How Long Do CEREC Crowns Last?
CEREC crowns are intended to provide a long-term restoration, but no crown has a guaranteed lifespan. How long a crown lasts depends on factors including:

Are CEREC Crowns as Strong as Traditional Crowns?
CEREC crowns can provide a strong and durable restoration when the material and treatment are appropriate for the tooth. Longevity depends on the remaining tooth structure, crown material, bite forces, grinding habits and oral care. A laboratory-made restoration may be recommended when it offers advantages for a particular tooth or clinical situation.
Does Getting a Same-Day Crown Hurt?
The tooth is normally numbed before it is prepared, so you should not feel sharp pain during the procedure. You may notice pressure or vibration, and some temporary sensitivity or gum tenderness can occur afterward. Contact the practice if discomfort is severe, persistent or worsening.
Can a Tooth Decay Underneath a CEREC Crown?
Yes. A crown covers and protects the visible tooth, but decay can still develop in the remaining tooth structure, particularly around the crown’s edge. Daily brushing, cleaning between the teeth and regular dental examinations help protect the tooth and allow changes to be identified early.
